German Army Barracks Searched For Nazi Memorabilia

The Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, has ordered all German army barracks to be inspected after Nazi-era memorabilia was found at two bases.

Officials found Wehrmacht paraphernalia, the army which served Adolf Hitler, openly displayed in a barracks common room despite the fact there being a ban on Nazi Symbols.

At another barracks, they are also said to have found a display cabinet containing pictures of Wehrmacht soldiers, Nazi-era helmets, and pistols.

A Defence Ministry spokesman has said that although these army barracks did not contain any Nazi objects punishable by German law, such as swastikas, they would not tolerate any glorification of the Wehrmacht in today's army.

A final report into the inspections of German barracks is due May 16. Picture: German army.

It follows growing claims of far-right extremism within the army, with an officer accused of plotting an attack disguised as a Syrian Refugee.

Germany's Minister of Defence, Ursula von der Leyen, said the latest scandals were no longer isolated cases, saying that "a misunderstood esprit de corps" had caused senior officers to "look the other way".

The minister has since apologised for her comments.
